Bron assures me that cables can be done with Homespun and I believe her, really I do. She’s a smart girl so I know she’s not wrong and she’s a good person so I know she’s not fibbing to me.
But…

There’s a cable and four bobbles in this picture.
Can you find them all?
I worked this swatch on size 10 1/2 needles. There’s a 10 stitch cable down the center but even at that size, it’s really not clear. And you can really only find the bobbles by running your hands over the fabric. Afghan material? I didn’t think so either…
I did try that complex cable pattern in the “girly” yarns, but they really didn’t go together. The cable patterns and the bobbles were clearly visible, but it does seem a rather heavy-duty design for such delicately colored yarn, so I scrapped it. Simple cables seem to be the best idea and it seems I am determined to have cables so - simple it is!
Due to an extraordinarily high pollen count and a correspondingly annoying sinus response, that’s about all the knitting I got done yesterday. Mostly I napped and waited for it to be time to take my next dose of sinus medication.

Where did she go?
The cats are getting on reasonably well these days, avoiding each other for the most part. There isn’t any fur flying and there’s been no bloodshed so we’re fine with this. Jade is most importunate in the morning, wailing her hunger pains all over the apartment till someone gets up and feeds her. No, she’s not melting away to nothing; there’s dry food available 24/7 for the felines. She just wants her canned food - NOW! She’s going to have to stop that or I’m going to start gagging her before I go to bed :)
Have a nice weekend folks :)
No trackbacks yet.
You have a feline alarm unit like me! Mine goes off around 6am when it’s working right. And I can’t see the cables or bobbles :-(
Ali - Jade was particularly insistent this morning - very unpleasant sound when you’re only half-awake :)
I can barely see the cable or bobbles even in person!
perhaps cables and bobbles would show up better on some of the very ‘pales’ found in the homespun colorway but the natural kinkiness of the yarn does tend to hide special effects, doesn’t it?
the catly residents here are so completely baffled by my olympics-watching schedule (up in the middle of the night and the wee hours of the morning to see special events on the cable channels) that they think food should be forthcoming at any time they stroll past their dishes- after all, their human is up munching madly on snacks and the lights are all on- it may take until the next olympics to get any of us back on track-
stay happy-
beautiful Kitty…. Bron is right cables can be done with homespun. I have made four or five cabled headbands with homespun. This is the pattern I used http://www.knitlist.com/00gift/super-quick-headband.htm
and size 11 needles. I find Homespun to stretch out real easy. Maybe that is just me . Have a great weekend!
Hi Barb - Perverse little critters, aren’t they? But they’re so much fun. Jade is very fond of the demon weed (catnip) and we laugh our heads off at her “stoned” antics. I guess it all balances out in the end :)
Maureen - I do belive you and, as Barb mentions above, perhaps a lighter color would work better. But these are the colors I have so they’re going to have to suffice. The afghan is intended to use up the stuff I’ve already got :)
Hope your weekend is lovely too!
Cats are wonderful alarm clocks! Unfortunately, they do not know the difference between workdays and days off. My cats think they should eat at 5 am even on days I think I should be sleeping past 5 am. We compromise. I get up at 5 am and feed them and then go back to bed. I guess they have trained me well. Sigh.
When I first got my cats, I thought I would outsmart them and prevent them from begging for food at dinnertime, by not feeding them at a specific hour. Sometimes I fed them a little early, sometimes I fed them a little late. Backfired on me com-pletely. All this did was cause them to beg for food all the time, since they never knew when it was coming!
Lisa - I’ve been through that when I had cats who had been rescues, been strays. They ALWAYS woke me early and they ALWAYS ate everything I put down for them because (I’m guessing), when they were strays, they never knew where or when they would get their next meal.
Ryan - I think you’re right about what happened and why :) Jade is reasonably bright and I’m hoping a little training with a squirt bottle will help her realize that she’ll get fed even FASTER when she doesn’t scream!
Just because you can do cables in homespun doesn’t mean you should. The rule I use is that the more the yarn has going on, the less I do with it. Plain, smooth one-colour yarn? Cables, bobbles, have a blast. Textured multicolour? My effort is wasted. Do one big honking cable or nothing at all. Besides, bobbles are a one way trip to the funny farm. (Well…that’s my experience of them.)
Hi Stephanie - Yes, I’m pretty sure I agree with you here - except about the bobbles (given the right kind of yarn, of course). I kinda like them :)
I think I can see the cable if I squint and tilt my head to the left. Or maybe I just have a good imagination.
I’m with you, I don’t think I would bother with the bobbles or cables in that color of Homespun.
Tsk…tsk…not DARK Homespun! I should’ve specified. ;) I DO see the cable….but bobbles? I’ll take your word for it.
Honestly - I agree with you about Homespun - it’s being priced right out of the “useable” range. So…since the range of “useable” is only stockinette, it should be about a buck a skein, don’t you think?
Sarra - LOL - this wasn’t meant to be a vision test :)
Bron - I believe you’re right about the lighter color - and also about Homespun being a bit too pricy for its britches. I paid less at Elann for the White Buffalo which comes in a huge hunk (8 oz) and is wool to boot!
And which I’m still waiting for (tapping foot impatiently)!
