Kimono and sock

The body of the kimono coat is about half done - a little more than half, say.

Half a kimono coat

If this comes out even remotely like the picture in my head, I will be very happy :)  SO far, so good.

This multi-colored stripe runs down the center back and a similar stripe will border the entire garment when it is finished.  I still haven’t decided whether the sleeves should be cuffed or not.

It has gotten very warm here - up into the high 80s or low 90s most afternoons.  As a result, trees and shrubs that had been looking like they’d passed on over the winter have suddenly budded and burst into leaf - seemingly overnight!

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of knitting/crocheting getting done either because it’s just not real comfortable to have something big and wooly sitting in your lap :)  Time to work on more socks, I guess :)

Sock

Look Ma - five needles!

And, speaking of socks, this one is coming along.  It seems I try something new with every sock I make.  With this one, it’s knitting with 5 needles instead of four.  That’s one of the reasons I had hoped the bamboos would work out - they come in sets of 5.  As I’m sure you all know, good, old metal American DPNs usually come in sets of only 4.  Consequently, because I only have 4 size 1 metal needles, the 5th is a size 0.

I’m finding working on four needles to be fairly easy.  I’ve tried it before and found it nothing but awkward and uncomfortable.  This time, something seemed to fall into place in my head/fingers and I’m finding this a rather pleasant way to go - easier to divide the stitches up between needles too.  And, as far as I can tell, the rotating presence of the size 0 needle doesn’t seem to be posing any problems.

Happy hump day!

  1. i think ez, in one of her books, wrote about using one needle that was ‘off’ while making socks-

for whatever it’s worth, i would think that since the needles actually migrate around the sock, the one that is only slightly off-sized would not make all that much difference- anyway, we’re talking about socks and fun-

the kimono jacket looks interesting- i once crocheted a vest that went from side to side- it certainly was easy to make, but the vest ended up needing a shorter-waisted owner than yours truly- if i knew then what i know now, i could have played with math and altered the pattern-

stay happy- enjoy the warm green days-

  2. Barb - I had read about the “odd” sized needle somewhere but I couldn’t remember who talked about it.  But that’s pretty much what I thought too - since it’s rotating around the work, it probably wouldn’t be a big deal :)

The kimono might turn out to be a gift, if things progress as nicely as they have so far.  And, of course, once I’ve worked out all the bugs, I can make another one for myself :)

  3. Love the looks of the Kimono jacket. I can’t wait to see it finished. I am a small project person too. It is just easier in the warmer weather. I find I always knit hats and mittens and socks in the summer. Great idea with the smaller needle.

  4. Thanks Maureen :)  If I think I’m going to want to use 5 needles instead of the traditional 4, I’ll probably just go out and acquire another set of 0s, 1s, and 2s.  For now, this seems to work just fine :)

  6. Thanks KM, I feel good about the way it’s coming along and am keeping my fingers crossed - in so far as that doesn’t get in then way of crocheting :)

  7. May I vote for cuffs? I think they’d look smashing on the jacket. :) Lovely work - can’t wait to see it finished!

Regarding the heat - it’s pretty hot around here too but my knitting chair is conveniently placed almost directly under the swamp cooler (evaporative cooler.) I’d be cool as a cucumber with the heaviest project in my lap. There are advantages to being Queen Bee. hehehe

  8. Bron - Yeah, I think cuffs would be appropriate to the “look” such as it is too.  It’s really going to depend on how long the sleeves need to be and how much yarn is left after the body is completed.  Sound familiar? LOL!
