Motifs and the White Sapphire

We have a small kitchen table, you see, and I’ve always wanted to make a lace tablecloth…(click photos for links)

Like this, maybe: Pagoda

Or this: Sweet Clover

Or perhaps this: Star

I’d only be making two or three small motifs at a time and that shouldn’t tax my fingers overly much.  Eventually I’d have a beautiful piece of lace.  God knows I’ve got enough thread :)

My fingers were complaining big time, by the time I finished up last night, so I now know that 6 hour crochet sessions (well, when little tiny crochet is involved) are not a good thing.  But Celt’s Vintage Crochet site is such a treasure trove of beautiful stuff that I’ll definitely be going back.

The reason for the 6 hour session is that when I had finished my daily allocation of White Sapphire, I realized that I only had another couple of rounds to go.  That being the case, I went ahead and did them (one of them twice, due to an inaccuracy in the pattern - grrrr…).  Then I washed it and pinned it out.

This is what it looks like:

Crocheted lace doily

White Sapphire

It measures just over 15” in diameter.  The original pattern called for a #10 or #11 hook and a finished diameter of about 14” so I’m right in the ballpark there.

Today I’m going to knit.  On big needles!

Happy Friday-the-13th folks!

  1. oh, ‘white sapphire’ is beautiful!! your work is so even-

i look at the exquisite creations made from joined motifs and just tremble- i cannot for the life of me join the blasted things successfully- i am however going to plunk myself down for 2 weeks of steady olympic viewing with off-white #10 thread and some doily patterns- matted against color and framed they look quite nice in hallways, foyers, and even kitchens and bathrooms- umm, christmas gifts already maybe??

http://www.denisecrochets.com/  and the site priscilla hewitt keeps up have some real beauties-

OR, i could work on the rather mindless shawl project which is slowly taking shape on needles-

have a nice weekend and stay happy-

  2. Love the White Saphire!  You do lovely work!  I wish I could still crochet in the finer threads.  I had to give it up as it was causing me a great deal of pain at the base of my thumb and in my wrist.  It was my favorite type of crochet, specially filet.

  3. Barb - Oooh, the doily framed on a colored ground sounds like a super idea!  You go girl - I’ll bet they’re gorgeous.  Nice idea for Christmas presents.

I like joining motifs as I go, but some are intended to be sewn together - would that work better for you?  What about working a non-granny afghan sqaure in thread instead of yarn and just sewing them together?

Thanks for the link; I have been there before, but this reminded me to bookmark it.

    Have a great weekend!

  4. Judy - Thanks for the compliment, but I am also going to have to be careful in the future as this did stress my fingers out.

Could you do things in stages?  A few rounds or rows a day?  So you wouldn’t have to give it up entirely and you’d still be able to make things?

  7. AWESOME JOB! I Love your White Sapphire!!! I vote for Pagoda for your table cloth. What a huge project-thanks for the links too! I think it’s a lost art to make such heirlooms and I love to see people doing it! Such patience though! My mother has my Grandma’s table clothes and bed spreads (all crocheted) They are just gorgeous. Can’t wait to see what you pick!

  8. Hiya PJ - Well, I made a swatch motif of “Pagoda” yesterday, but I wasn’t thrilled with it - mainly because I didn’t like the thread I was using.  I’ll try it again in a bit with the cotton/linen - which is what I’d be making it out of anyway.  I do like that one, though “Sweet Clover” is pretty nice too :)

  9. What a beautiful job on the White Sapphire. I imagine your fingers were sore. I think I am going to have to try one of these doileys.I just love the looks of them.

  10. Thanks Mauren - I enjoyed doing this and finding out that I still could do this :)  It’s so satisfying, at the end, to have something that beautiful!  If you decide on this pattern though, get back to me - there’s an inaccuracy in it in the later rounds :)

  11. Hey there - better late than never, eh?

Lovely work! Now that I see it complete I could swear I have that pattern somewhere. I’ll have to look it up since I really love the design.  2thumbsup.gif width=25 height=16

I like the background in the pic too - is that a batik bedspread? My fav color!

Your tablecloth will be just as lovely, I’m sure. I’ve never been a big fan of motif work - probably because you have to do the same thing over & over & over. :::grin:::: But someday I’ll make one too….no motifs…. just a doily on steroids. Hehehehe

  12. Hiya Bron :)  Well, the pattern link is in the post in case you can’t find it.

The spread is a batik-style print and it’s my favorite - the colors, the patterns and everything are beautiful :)  It was part of one of those “whole” bed kits.

You know, I’ve never been big on making single BIG pieces - motif work is perfect for me.  But I’ve seen a couple of patterns (of the big-one-piece variety) that could make me change my mind!
