Spring fever is a pain in the patoot, albeit a lovely one. I have little focus, practically no attention span, and very little desire to do much of anything. On the other hand, I am delighted at the bird song that is increasing every day as our feathered friends all return from their winter vacations. The air has that peculiar soft feeling that it only has during the last two weeks of March and the first two weeks of April - the robins are back, flowers are poking tentative leaves out of the ground and all my windows are open :)
It’s a very odd time. I am looking for a lace pattern to float my boat and not having any luck at all. But I know, sure as I’m sitting here that some of these patterns are things that positively thrilled me six weeks ago and will, more than likely, thrill me again a few weeks hence! I can’t even settle on little projects. I can’t tell you how many socks and scarves have been started and abandoned in the last couple of weeks - makes me want to tear my hair out.
But I also know it will pass.
I went back and looked at the things I was doing at this time of year - it’s always a surprise to me what good journals blogs make :) Last year it was this:
The Dulaan Scarf - and I remember working on it on the plane flying down to Florida. Apparently I had some ambition - a little anyways - last year :)
The year before, I had just acquired this:
...and was awash in the possibilities :)
Spring is a good time, maybe the perfect time, for dreaming. This year it feels as though there is some portentous knitting in the offing and I want to keep an eye out for it. A splendid shawl, the socks that will bring the world to its knees - something. So I’ll keep looking at patterns, casting on and abandoning, and in there, somewhere, amongst all the angst and indecision, maybe something will begin to grow.
It only takes a seed - or maybe a seed stitch!
I’m as dizzy as a spider spinning daydreams,
I’m as giddy as a baby on a swing!
I haven’t seen a crocus or a rosebud,
Or a robin on the wing.
Yet I feel so gay
In a melancholy way,
That it might as well be spring…

Spring makes me itchy and irritable. I’m always sad to see the last of winter pass away, but my body really likes having Vitamin D around to process again. So I’m happy to see the sun, but grumpy that I’m happy about it ...
And I just have to tell you, the opening of Kingdom Hearts II is *amazing*. Absolutely gorgeous, intricate plot, the works. For the last hour of the 4! hour prologue, I actually put down my knitting and just watched. I don’t think you live anywhere near me, or else I’d offer to let you borrow it when we were done with it.
Colleen - That’s really sweet of you and I thank you for the offer. But I’m content to wait for it since I know it will be both a good game and a sumtuous, visual feast! The original was such a kick in the pants :)
Lovely post - sums up my feelings at this time of year quite nicely!
PS - Sorry I missed last night! The cold medicine put me out like a light!!
Oh yeah I love that R&H! I’ve got to finish this darn cap and get something picked out to take with me to the polls tomorrow. I’m a voting commissioner [that’s a poll worker in the rest of the world!]. That runs from 0530 hrs to 2000 + however long it takes to shut down the machines and do the paperwork. I can’t leave and I wouldn’t dare send my husband into my knitting stuff. Eek, what a mess it would be when I got home. Hmm maybe I could do a toe so I could knit on some socks… ahhh Spring spring spring…that’s when I say goodbye to lovely cool weather.
Loved the Chat yesterday evening.
Thanks Bron :) I knew you weren’t feeling too spiffy and that you had an ailin’ young’un to take care of too so I wasn’t surprised :) I do hope you’re feeling better soon!
Aarlene - R&H wrote some the most beautiful songs in the American song book and I love them to death - along with Cole Porter, the Gershwins and Jerome Kern :) Lovely, lovely music.
A sock sounds like ideal poll-sitting knitting :) Not big or bulky, but involved enough to last all day should it need to!
Yes…Spring is in the air. The purple finches have arrived in all the glorious color. The goldfinches are turning fast. I LOVE this time of year. You said about a lace project… What about that Trellis Scarf from Knitty? The Meadow Flowers shawl is beautiful from your Knitters Stash book too. Have a great weekend and enjoy this weather. I enjoyed chatting the other night.
Maureen - I did try the Meadow Flowers shawl with a cotton blend - which is why I think I didn’t like the way it was coming out. It just might be time to try it again with a wool or a wool silk :)
Finches - how I envy you; they must be just delightful to watch!
Glad you enjoyed yourself THursday night - it was great of you to come :)
I get you w/ the spring fever thing! Can’t decide what to knit…don’t want to go to school…just want to wander around a park w/ the puppy!
Anna - You’ve got it - that’s it exactly!
Hi Robbyn - feeling the same way here in the antipodes, I must say. Must have something to do with being between houses. Can’t get my houses in order etc… Take care of you
Nathalie - Lord, being “between” houses must be a royal pain in the rump. I hope things settle out for you soon :)
