The Airborne Chibi
We’re big believers in Airborne® around here. It’s a preparation full of vitamins and herbal supplements which is purported to help ward off colds and flu. I use it every day when I’m on a ship, not to mention airplanes, waiting rooms and doctor’s offices. Myria, having had pneumonia a couple of years back, and having had a bad time with it, likes the stuff too. And, it seems to do a fairly good job. Thing is, if you take the stuff, eventually you’re going to wind up with an empty container - like this:
Now, if you have a clever partner (which I do!) they might look at this empty tube thoughtfully and ask you if it wouldn’t be a good container for tapestry needles or markers or any other small knitting accessory that might otherwise get lost in the shuffle?
Aha! Brilliant!
So I appropriated the empty tube, measured it, did a swatch and knitted a little sleeve -
And voila!
At first I thought the whole Chibi would fit inside but it’s just a bit too tall. No matter. The tube makes a nice little case with a snug fitting lid and I can find lots of ways to use it.
I know, not a world beater - but fun anyway :)
For the sleeve I used Lionbrand Magic Stripes sock yarn and size 2 DPNs. Cast on 32 stitches, join and work in K2, P2 ribbing until you reach the length you want and then bind-off in pattern.
Cripes, next I’ll be decorating tissue boxes and toilet paper rolls :) Not!
No trackbacks yet.
umm, i think the ‘airborne chibi’ (sounds like a leaping dog) might have a definite place right beside my sucrets stitch-marker holder which in turn sits by the olive jar hook holder and the tattered pringle can holding knitting needles- around here we are *all* about class!
stay happy-
Very cool idea. How about beading around it?? Or fine embroidered ribbon?? There are SO many things.
Those “travel Tylenol” containers are smaller, but would work as well. Or, I guess, prescription vials??
Barb - I know what you mean - my needles are sitting in and old, plastic coffee mug - inside a knitted bag. I had to give it a little something :) A Sucrets bix - now that’s an interesting idea!
Kim - Oooh - beading is a wonderful idea; that would really spruce things up!
Okay, you’ve got me thinking now…I don’t use Airborne, but I do occasionally buy a little tube of M&M’s Minis, and I could bead around that easily.
It’s tall enough, too, that if I happened to have an actual Chibi (I don’t), I think it would fit.
Folkcat - Yep - I know the one you mean and those would work great too :) I hate to throw out nice containers if I can think of some way to use them!
Robbyn, great use of striping sock yarn! But, I fear, a slippery slope toward those t.p. covers. though now that I think about it, a really funky, creative, beaded tp cover… why not?
I use those m&m tubes for crochet hooks.
Rob - LOL! I keep my TP in a cabinet and have no need to make it a dress :) God, you’re right about the slippery slope thing. Stop me - before I knit again! ARGHHHHH…
Pam - Good idea - I wouldn’t have thought they’d be long enough!
Excellent idea - love the woolly cover! This made me smile!
:)
Nat - Well, it’s pretty goofy - but it’s still fun :)
An Airborne Chibi; that’d be Working Class or Sport?
I was inspired here to sort out my wee stash last night. I found a skein of that identical sock yarn from LB. And several sock yarns as was paired but no longer so I don’t know how I’ll make pairs of socks with those. Hmmm I guess the stash gremlins ran off with the single skeins. Why they don’t take two of a pair I’ll never know!
The AC warmer is odd but cute or cute but odd, I’m not sure which. LOL Have fun in RI.
Aarlene - I think the sock skeins operate on the same principle as the socks themselves - you only ever lose one. In fact I’m not sure you don’t have evidence there of it being a characteristic of the actual yarn rather than the sock, per se. I guess the thing to do would be to make two identical things that aren’t socks and see if one of them disappears.
Scientific method and inquiring minds, you know :)
Now that gave me a good chuckle…. you are inventive.
Thanks Maureen - we aims to please :) ‘Course there’s a pretty fine line between inventive and just plain loopy - Heheh…
Robbyn:
I have a Barbie here, naked from the waist down if you want to crochet a skirt for her, I could use it in my guest bathroom ;)
Let me know.
Lisa - LOL - I’ll pass - but have you considered turning that same, naked-from-the-waist-down Barbie upside down and using her as a two-pronged ring holder?
Just a suggestion…
Cool idea! I personally use the plastic cylinder that the tiny type of M&M’s come in (look near the checkout counter in Wal-Mart if you don’t know what I mean)—it’s a bit larger and perfect for me. But I didn’t customize it like you did yours—kudos! ;o)
